The Palworld community has long dreamed of diving deep into the ocean to discover hidden aquatic Pal cities. However, developer Pocketpair has finally addressed these expectations with a definitive answer: it’s not happening. While the current game won't see an underwater expansion, the studio hints that Palworld 2 might be the place where these ambitious ideas finally come to life.
The Technical "Hard Ceiling" of Palworld
According to Bucky, the Communications Lead at Pocketpair, adding complex underwater levels to the existing game is technically unfeasible. The core reason lies in the game's current architecture, which is already being pushed to its "absolute limits."
Integrating a massive underwater overhaul would require a fundamental restructuring of the game’s engine, something that isn't possible through a standard DLC or update without breaking the current experience.
Hardware Constraints: Protecting the Player Base
Another reason we won't see deep-sea exploration in the current title is optimization. Palworld must remain playable across various platforms, including the Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.
- Performance Issues: Massive underwater environments are notoriously resource-heavy.
- Stability: Pushing the limits further could lead to game-breaking crashes on older hardware.
Why Palworld 2 Is a Different Story
While the door is closed for the current version, the developers are leaving it wide open for a potential sequel.
Features like terraforming and full underwater biomes are often described by the team as "features for a hypothetical Palworld 2." Building a game from the ground up for next-gen hardware would allow Pocketpair to implement the high-fidelity aquatic world that players crave without the technical baggage of the first installment.
For now, the ocean remains a boundary, but for the future of the franchise, it may just be the next frontier.
